Influence can affect a whole range of things that include income, people, power, stability, love relationships, obedience of children and much more. Your influence helps you get what you want without having to brow beat other people. Influence is more beneficial that power because people become to associate their needs with yours. There are a number of ways to gain influence with other people. However, you must be willing to learn these new ways of thinking and communicating. Talking rudely, not seeing other peoples’ perspectives or not following acceptable standards of behavior won’t get you much influence. Influence is an art form that few can master. 1.) Understanding: If you try and make people understand you then you may not go that far. Understand them first and listen to what they want. By understanding them you come to a greater awareness of their needs. 2.) Find Your Common Ground: If you can find a common ground with people they will begin to associate their needs with yours. You will be seen as an “in-group” person whom they need to help and protect. Making suggestions once you have found common ground is easier. 3.) Look for the Meaning: Look for what the person is saying beyond their literal words. For example, anger can be an expression of fear. A person may fight you because they feel as though you are threatening their lifestyle. If you have this insight you will better know what you are supposed to do. 4.) Show some Kindness: When you care about the people you desire to influence; they will care about you. Caring leads to all types of help and concessions. When people care about you they want to see you succeed and will go out of their way to make it happen. 5.) Timing: Sometimes people have bad days and feel rushed. If you ask for something on one of those days they aren’t likely to help you out. Be perceptive about what is going on and make your request at the opportune times. For example, don’t ask for someone to devote a few hours to your project on a day their relative passed away. Influence isn’t a science. There are no hard and fast rules about how to get people to do what you want. The culmination of factors might include your perception, communication skills, insight into yourself, education level, physical appearance and much more. However, each of us can increase our influence by focusing on the above principles. Murad Ali, a two-time published author, writes articles and offers advertisement space for businesses.
