Even though the politicians are touting the strong economy as it relates to their administration there are serious problems just underneath the surface. If one were to follow the issue they may come to the realization that there are serious problems right underneath the image of a “strong economy”. One of these problems relate to our poor education system in our K-12 grades. Bill Gates met with Congress and expressed his concerns related to the skill level of American workers. He would like to raise or ban altogether the cap on hiring highly qualified technological workers from other countries. His problem is that he has 3,000 open positions that he cannot find qualified American workers for. Thus, without getting H1B visas for qualified foreign workers there is a good possibility that these positions will stay vacant. "The U.S. cannot maintain its economic leadership unless our work force consists of people who have the knowledge and skills needed to drive innovation," said Gates to the Senate committee that overseas labor & education issues. A recent federal study showed that about 1/3 of high school students fail a standard-level curriculum, 40% of high school seniors fail a basic math test, on science 50% of high school seniors don’t even have basic science skills. The problems related to education, labor and our ability to progress as a country can be defined as simply “the failure to strive as a people”. In essence people feel a sense of entitlement, take education for granted, and don’t have much motivation to succeed. This lethargic and content way of living among our working class is falling short our national needs. The country is slowly splitting into a two class society where we have the wealthier (at least upper middle class) members who are highly motivated, educated, and successful when compared to the working class where hip hop culture, low levels of education, and chronic television watching are the norm.
