Ben S. Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, says that the economy is still growing just at a little slower rate. In his semiannual report to congress Mr. Bernanke believes that even though the economy appears to be slowing down it doesn’t mean that it is hurt. Quite to the contrary, the growth is now more sustainable and is likely to last longer. This more stable growth period should be smooth for most Americans with lower unemployment and few major upsets. Interest rates are holding steady at 5.2% which is expected to help against inflation. The housing market has slowed considerably in some parts of the country that experiences a 29% decline. China still constitutes the largest trading gap making up $232.5 billion dollars of the $716.7 billion dollar 2006 deficit. William Strauss of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago says that the economy will grow around 3% a year for the next three years. He believes recession threats are low but does blame the increasing oil prices as part of the problem. The auto industry and the housing industry are declining and these are major contributors to the economy. What Ben Bernanke and William Strauss feel is safe but slow growth for the American economy isn’t doing much for the people who live here or America’s greatness. Our slowness gives China the opportunity to keep catching up and possibly surpassing the U.S. making us the #2 economy in the world. This would be the first time in nearly a century that the U.S. has to sit in the back. The American people do not want to be safe they want to sore like an Eagle if only the chains of poor politicians were released.
