The nation is in a leadership crisis which has the potential to contribute to the decline of the country. Even worse, Americans are fed up with our CEOs, politicians and school administrators who are not able to rally the country to change. At almost no time in history has the American populace felt such resentment and distrust of the people who are in charge. According to a second annual poll on leadership conducted for U.S. News and Harvard University’s Center for Public Leadership Americans are simply not happy with how the country is being run (Brush, 2006). Their findings were as follows: 56% of Americans say they are not proud of the country’s leadership. Out of 11 different society sectors none of them had more than 40% believe that they had strong confidence in current leaders. 75% of American’s feel that the country will decline without an influx of new and better leadership. 83% say corporate leaders are more concerned with corporate profits than running the company well. 93% of respondents believe that political leaders spend too much time attacking their opponents. 39% of American’s believe that leaders have high ethical standards where self-indulgent actions are avoided. The distrust of American leaders is due to the changing of American values. Since the 70’s the country has changed in terms of demographics, looser values, and a “me first” attitude left over from the baby boomers. Perhaps the Generation Y and X’ers are even in a worse position to adhere to traditional values as the psychology of broken homes, lack of community connection, and “nepotism” have been part of their past. Leadership is about having the moral authority to lead other people instead of filling one’s own coffers. Murad Ali is a three time book author, a human resource manager, and a Ph.D. candidate.
