Oceania Cruises has announced they will be adding two new ports for 2012… Qaqortoq and Tasiilaq. Both found in Greenland, Qaqortoq is in southern Greenland – whereas Tasiilaq is situated on the east side of the country. Offering cruisers a delightful insight into Greenland’s Inuit culture, Oceania Cruises have added these new ports in order to give each of their passengers a glimpse into the ‘real’ Greenland. Inuit customs and traditions are still strongly embraced here – so these ports of call are perfect. Oceania Cruises have also got an array of activities in store for each of the guests... from hiking, dog sledding to sea kayaking and whale watching. The ultimate adventure awaits you… A glimpse into Qaqortoq and Tasiilaq Seeing that Oceania Cruises are to visit these two ports of call, here’s a few facts on each of the destinations. First up is Qaqortoq. The largest town in Southern Greenland, Qaqortoq is where an array of colonial buildings - which were built back in 1755 – can be discovered. Meaning "White Palace" in Greenlandic, Qaqortoq has a population of only 3,500 people. Inuit were first drawn to the site over 200 years ago. It’s thought that Qaqortoq’s wealth of marine mammals in the offshore waters attracted them here. Qaqortoq is also home to the oldest fountain in the world. Oceania Cruises’ other new port of call – Tasiilaq - is situated in south-eastern Greenland. The seventh-largest town in Greenland, just over 1,900 people call this small, picturesque town their home. Founded by Danish explorers in 1894, Tasiilaq was originally called Ammassalik - meaning ‘the place with lots of ammassats’ (small fish). Why Oceania Cruises? Founded in 2002, Oceania Cruises is the world’s only upper premium cruise line.
