Stockbridge Selectman Bobby Flower said the continuing delay is "frustrating because it’s really necessary" to serve downtown. "It seems the carriers are more interested in serving the MassPike," he observed. Flower suggested that a Select Board meeting on Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 may be the place to urge some action from Verizon. The company’s request for a special permit to add three panels to its antenna installation at the Sportsman Club is on the agenda for that meeting. "We’re going to urge Verizon to do whatever they can to get us service," said Marsden, who pointed out that Town Hall has installed a booster so employees and members of the public can use their cellphones there. Flower has installed a signal booster at home, an expense not many other residents are willing to bear. Police Chief Richard Wilcox has called cellphone service improvement "a critical need, because the busiest areas in town have the poorest cell phone signal booster" The Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce has been pushing hard for service, citing tourism that generates more than $8 million a year for the town. It also touts studies showing that in peak summer season, 22,600 vehicles a day pass through the town. Red Lion officials have also generated a letter-writing campaign to the major cellphone carriers.
