Sales gimmicks or not, many sellers of goods are placing their products in great-looking, attractively packaged Gift Sets. As the name implies, gift sets are collections of goods of similar nature or wares that are closely associated with one another conveniently put together ‘for your easy location and use’ so the advertisements sometimes proclaim. There are countless types of gift sets, from gift sets containing cooking utensil, cutlery, tea-sets to gift sets containing stationeries, confectioneries and even dictionaries. Skincare gift sets, fragrances gift set, oils or lotions gift set, philately gift sets – the list goes on and on. In fact, it is no exaggeration to assert that there are as many varieties of gift sets as there are gifts. From a consumer’s perspective, you should not buy a set of goods (cleverly labelled as ‘Gift Set’ whether one buys it for the purpose of giving to others as gifts or not) containing items some of which you do not need or want. For instance, if all you lack is an eraser or a set square, there is no need to buy a stationery ‘gift set’ containing dividers, protractors, pencils, rules, set squares and erasers. Likewise, if you are only shopping for a piece of soap, it would be wasteful to purchase a collection of cute, beautiful looking soap bars nicely wrapped up in a gift set called ‘Oriental Collection of Soap’ or bearing other exotic names. So, what do you do when you stand in front of the relevant shop lots of shopping arcades, admiring the rows and rows of gift sets artfully displaced on the shelf? You have to make a decision: to buy or not to buy. That pretty much depends on whether you are purchasing the gift set for your own use or if you really mean to get it as a gift for your friends or relations. For instance, many baby wears – nappies, diapers, aprons, baby toiletries - are put into an attractive package for convenient gift ideas but if you only want the individual items e.g. you only want the baby toiletries for your own newborn, you should not succumb to buying the whole gift set. Of course it would be a different matter if someone were to present you this gift set containing all the baby items you need. In conclusion, gift sets are convenient and fine as tokens of goodwill and good wishes, but as consumers we should always bear in mind that not all the items packed in a nice-looking box or receptacle are necessities. Unless and until these so-called Gift Sets are sold at a very big discount during promotional periods, it is perhaps wiser to play the intelligent and astute consumer.
