Jonathan Hayman, one of the creative consultants and writers for the series’ Seinfeld, It’s Like, You Know…, and The Chris Rock Show, has appeared in and influenced numerous shows. Mr. Hayman has also acted on all of the aforementioned programs, as well as the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm. Throughout 1992-1993, Hayman served as program consultant on numerous Seinfeld episodes. Perhaps one of the all-time, most remembered of these includes “The Junior Mint,” where complications for the characters are caused after the candy in the title is accidentally dropped into a hospital patient’s open incision during an operation. The plot also includes a memorable gag in which Jerry forgets the name of a woman he goes on date with, only to remember that it rhymes with a female body part. Seinfeld fans may also recall the classic episode entitled “The Bubble Boy”, in which Hayman played the iconic, character of the title, Donald Sanger. The role is entirely characterized by Hayman’s voice and his gloved hands, as the audience is never allowed to actually see the actor’s face due to the played up gag of his character being quarantined. Many fans agree that this is one of their all time favorite episodes. The scene between the Bubble Boy and George Constanza getting into a brawl over a trivia board game is one of the show’s numerous, classic moments. The character of Donald Sanger originally debuted in the show’s pilot episode and made a third, final appearance on the series’ finale. Another example of his Seinfeld contributions includes co-writing the episode “The Movie”, in which the four central characters exhaustingly try to meet up for a movie showing. In the episode, Jerry has trouble getting to the show on time and misses it, then ends up losing his seat to another comedian character. The rest of the cast ends up missing the rendevous with Jerry due to leaving to purchase hot dogs, getting in trouble with ushers, and trying to catch a screening of the movie at an entirely different theatre. “The Movie” is one of the best examples of the series’ missed connection-style plotting and of the main characters turning an everyday, simple get together into an endlessly complicated mess. Along with his consulting with Seinfeld, Hayman took a more involved role as both producer and writer for The Chris Rock Show in the later 1990’s. He is credited as having taken part in the writing of every episode in the program’s first two seasons, as well as having played himself in some of the episodes. More recently, Jonathan Hayman has returned to working with Seinfeld co-creator Larry David on his HBO show Curb Your Enthusiasm. Hayman appeared in both the episodes “Club Soda and Salt” and “The Benadryl Brownie” and the character of Chef Randy. Much like the best moments in Seinfeld, these episodes slowly spiral out of control and result in hilarity. Jonathan Hayman has taken part in some of the most successful, creative teams in comedy television history.
