It’s important to look at jaw surgery for a variety of reasons. Your dentist may suggest it to you based upon how your bite is – though often times it is used as a form of cosmetic surgery to enhance your overall appearance. You may not realize it, but your jaw line is responsible for how your face looks in a number of ways – and surgery can change that to help improve your appearance. Look Younger One of the top reasons to look at jaw surgery is so you can look younger. Over the years, your bone density can change and this can have a negative effect on your appearance. It may cause skin to hang in an unattractive way along your cheeks or elsewhere on your face. In the event that you do have jaw surgery, your doctor should be able to give you some before/after photos so you can see how it has had a positive impact on others with a similar condition. This will make it easier for you to determine if it’s the right surgery for you. Breathing Difficulties Sleep apnea is another reason to have the surgery. If your jaw is at a particular position that is blocking the airways, it may be as simple as altering the jaw line to improve the way you breathe at night. You will then be able to get the oxygen you need into your system. You may be able to say goodbye to a C-PAP machine and you may never snore again. If you need jaw surgery for this reason, you will want to talk to your doctor about what the implications are and what the costs are. This is not cosmetic surgery and as a result, your insurance may pay for it as it can improve your overall health status. The Consultation If you even think that you may need jaw surgery, it’s a good idea to sit down with your doctor and find out how it can benefit you. They can provide a consultation where you can ask questions and learn what the pros and cons of the surgery are. There may be other surgeries for you to consider as well that may have better or worse results depending upon what your current affliction is. At the end of the day, you have to remember that everyone is different. Surgery for your jaw may be exactly what you need to look younger, cure sleep apnea, or handle other issues. The only one who can answer the questions you have is a doctor – and they are going to want a face to face with you to be able to perform an exam and see the extent of the damage. They are likely going to talk about all of the procedures that can help you and then you can decide if jaw surgery is right for you.
