Evaporation is a big deal when it comes to why your pool water does not stay warm. A good pool cover will minimize this evaporation, thereby keeping more water in. A cover used in conjunction with a heating system provides a can’t-fail solution to using your swimming pool almost year-round. Covers are versatile and there are options for indoor, outdoor, in-ground and above-ground pools. Solar covers are an excellent choice because they are inexpensive and they help keep things clean. Late spring, summer and early fall are great times to use a cover. If you do not like having to take a solar blanket on and off each time you get in, or if you are looking for a more permanent winter cover for those months you simply cannot get in, then read on. Liquid Covers Liquid pool covers are one of the most popular solar pool cover alternatives for people who do not want to take a cover on and off of a pool. They perform the same tasks as a traditional solar pool cover or blanket, but they do not need to be removed. They are made of biodegradable materials and are poured onto your pool. At $200 for a gallon of good stuff, they are certainly not a cheaper option, but they work fine if you are the type of person who wants a cover 24/7, or if you always forget to put your pool cover on. This option is not the best for very windy or cold climates, and they do not help keep debris out of the pool. Winter Covers Special winter covers are alternatives when you just are not going to use the pool. Sometimes the weather outside is so vicious that the swimming would be miserable. In these months, a good winter cover is probably necessary. This is a heavy-duty option that is retro-fitted to your swimming pool and will keep inclement weather from harming it. If you live somewhere with extreme winter weather, or even stormy summers, these are good alternatives. They can be used in place of a solar pool cover to protect your investment and will withstand wind. There are additional alternatives, but these are the best ones out there. A simple tarp or safety cover are other alternatives, but those do not do anything to heat the pool during the cool nights. Although, either option will do a great job keeping debris out.
