Do you own an above-ground pool? Are you looking for a way to heat the temperature of the pool so you can get more use out of it? We have reviewed a cover for your above-ground pool. Keep reading for our (very) honest opinion. When looking for a solar cover, what should you be looking for? You definitely want to make sure your solar pool cover meets a few criteria. The cover should keep out debris, be fairly easy to get on and off the pool, it should be thick enough that the water will not evaporate, and see-through enough that the sun’s rays can get through the cover and heat the water. Oh, and it would be nice if it didn’t cost an arm and a leg either. Intex makes a solar cover that is light and inexpensive. You can purchase this solar pool cover online through Amazon or the Intex website. A light and inexpensive cover sounds desirable, right? Wrong. Thickness of the solar pool cover is key to heating your pool and this cover will not do that. The Intex Solar Pool Cover comes in many different sizes. All of this variety would be great if they actually fit over your pool, but we found them to be small. Even the 18’ did not fit securely over our 15’ Easy-Set pool. They sell 10’, 12’, 15’ and 18’ covers for both their Metal Frame and Easy-Set pools. If you do decide to go with this cover, then make sure you get a size or two bigger so it has a better chance of fitting. Another issue with the Intex Solar Pool cover is how thin it is. Yes, it can be easier to get the cover onto the pool, but it is so thin that wind and rain can move the cover. Any movement of the cover will cause more debris to get in the pool, more water to evaporate. You can try to secure down the cover, but even that does not work very well. A final concern with the Intex Solar Pool Cover is the holes that are on the cover. The holes are a bit larger than a quarter and they are designed to keep the pool cover from sinking or having too much water gather on it. Unfortunately, the cover still sinks a bit and the holes actually let some of heated water evaporate. Many consumer review sites will confirm our diagnosis of the Intex Solar Pool cover. It really is worth the money to get a more high quality cover. Don’t be swayed by the cheap list price of one of these covers. If you want a cover that really works and helps you to take advantage of all the benefits that going solar brings, then we suggest you look further than Intex. Our neighbors have an Intex pool that they are happy with, but we were strongly disappointed with the cover, how cheap it was, and how flimsy. Better luck with your next cover!
