A student, 19, was attacked and held at knifepoint in a Manchester hall of residence on July 19, 2010 after Paul Atta, a previously convicted rapist from Rusholme in South Manchester, forced entry into the complex and stormed the terrified student’s room and demanded to know if she’d rather get stabbed than have sex with him. Reports made at Liverpool Crown Court revealed that Paul had tried the same tactic on another woman near his home in Rusholme, who he had assaulted by punching her in the face. She managed to escape and inform the police and others of his intentions. However, not feeling satisfied with failing to detain the women, Atta then broke into another house where he trapped a teenage girl in her bedroom. She confessed to not having any money or laptop to which he replied: "If you've got no cash then you can have sex with me." Barrister Dennis Watson Q.C., a leading silk from Lincoln House Chambers, informed the court :"He then raped her. The knife was constantly in his hand or close by." Before this latest incident, Paul Atta had already served 14 years in jail for burglary and raping a woman, just 18 years old, after he also broke into her flat. Prosecutor Dennis Watson Q.C. also mentioned that the recent attacks were "strikingly similar" to his previous convictions back in 1991. He also forced a woman into giving him her bank card and PIN number so he could steal money from her account at a petrol station near where the incident took place. After standing trial, Atta was convicted of two counts of rape, one of which including ABH, two counts of robbery and two counts of fraud by false representation. He has also been told he has to serve a minimum of 12 years before he can apply for parole.
