What Makes a Good VRI Interpreter?

Communication

Communication is so much more than just speaking, especially when it comes to translation. Facial expressions, body language and eye contact are essential to comprehension and making the recipient feel at ease. This is where a skilled VRI interpreter can help support your customer, client, patient or student; providing them with more than just a telephone interpretation.

Thanks to advances in technology, all you need to help your client or patient is a good internet connection and a webcam. A reputable translation company will provide you with a highly qualified VRI interpreter to ensure that all the information is communicated clearly and with empathy.

Whether you’re interested in becoming a translator yourself or are looking for the right one to help your company, here are the top skills that every VRI interpreter should have.

Ethical Integrity

Many sectors that use these services will deal with highly sensitive or confidential information, and it’s the translator’s job to ensure that this information is communicated clearly and in a caring way. However, they must be aware of the regulations relating to patient and client privacy.

But ethical integrity encompasses more than keeping everything shared privately. A professional VRI interpreter must remember to remain impartial and communicate all messages just as they’ve heard them - that means no additions or omissions.

Language Skills

Of course, one of the most important skills is language ability. A good translator will have a much higher level of fluency than you might think. As well as understanding the language that is being communicated in, a good translator must be able to infer meaning from different nuances, registers and across a broad range of industries. This means that growing up bilingual doesn’t automatically make you a great translator. The language skills required are more complex.

Cultural Knowledge

Following on from language ability is cultural knowledge. Being bicultural will help the interpreter pick up on those little nuances that others may miss. Not only will this ensure that the conversation is effectively translated, but they’ll be able to interact with the client or patient more sensitively.

Subject Specific

Many VRI interpreters will specialise in a field, such as legal or medical settings. This means that they will be equipped with the subject knowledge necessary to understand what needs to be communicated. This is critical for a good translator, as they’ll need to be able to communicate potentially complex information clearly.

Listening and Responding

Last but not least, an agile mind is extremely useful for translation. There are two interpreting methods: simultaneous and consecutive. A translator will use one or the other depending on the industry they function in. Whichever is used, interpreting will be demanding on the brain, as the translator is frequently switching between languages, so stamina for this will be essential.

There are many benefits and uses for video remote interpreting services in today’s remote-forward world. However, whether you’re interested in the industry from a personal or professional perspective, it’s important to find a reputable and experienced company for the best outcome.
