Nowadays there is a lot of talk about using a vaping pen, or e-cigarette and buying items from a vape shop, but where did it all start? It might surprise you to hear that mechanical cigarettes are not as modern as you might think and nor is breathing in vapour in the form of scents, and smoked herbs. The latter has certainly been around for as long as there are written records and possibly longer. There are accounts from ancient Egypt, China, India and Rome of such things. The Romans were known to inhale in bathhouses and in India there was a sugary tobacco called shisha. There is even archeological evidence that supports the idea that back in the days where people lived in caves they were creating and inhaling vapours and smokes. Vaping inventions and patents history In the late 1920s, Joseph Robinson was awarded the first patent for electro-mechanical cigarettes. Back then he referred to it as an electronic vaporizer. Other patents were granted after for invention applications connected. Then in the 1960s, Herbert Gilbert invented the smokeless non-tobacco cigarette however it was not made for the mass market. The first modern electro-mechanical cigarette device Hon Lik in 2003 in China came up with the vaping device we are familiar with today. This electro-mechanical cigarette device was quite similar to what you can buy today and was made up of the same main components, a heating element, a plastic cartridge, the liquid nicotine compound, and a battery. When you are not familiar with them it sounds complex but really this was an easy item to make and not very expensive to make either. It was not really popular in China though and did not take off despite the fact that China has one of the largest smoking populations in the world. Why was it developed? The original device by Hon Lik was created and made to give people something to quit smoking with that would be better for their health and lungs. With vaping, there is no risk of lung disease, lung cancer, and other illnesses associated with cigarette smoking. With so many smokers struggling to quit and a big part of the problem being the habit they form not just the addiction to nicotine, going to a vape shop to get an e-cigarette helped people quit more successfully and stay cigarette-free. One of the issues too with other methods is the time it took the nicotine to reach their system. The vaping device means that people can get the nicotine into their system a lot quicker so they can relieve the stress and anxiety from the process of quitting using other methods. Summary When you are looking to quit smoking vaping is a good way to have success. But it is not as modern as people realise! Why the pen and other vaping bits are modern and always being updated and redeveloped with vapers enjoyment in mind, breathing in vapours and such has been around for thousands of years!
