Sometimes you just need to get away from your day-to-day routine – and adult weekends provide great opportunities for short weekend trips to discover new places. Known for its photogenic canals and brightly-coloured tulips, the Netherlands region offers a wide variety of exciting options for cruise-goers. From Keukenhof to Volendam and Enkhuizen to Hoorn, cruises in the Netherlands are a fantastic option for those looking to visit several places during their trip. No weekend away to the Netherlands is complete without a trip to its capital city, Amsterdam. Between its many museums, historic neighbourhoods and canals around every corner, it’s hard to know where to start! Here are our favourite sites to visit in Amsterdam on one of your adult weekends away. De Oude Kerke Looking for some splendid stained glass, impressive décor and ornate stonework? Check out Amsterdam’s oldest building, which dates back to 1306. Dutch for ‘The Old Church’, De Oude Kerke hosts a variety of talks, concerts and other events, and also houses the city’s oldest bell from 1450. Dam Square Constructed in the thirteenth century, Amsterdam’s central square once featured a bustling market full of vendors trading their goods. Today, this central area is still as busy as ever, filled with plenty of bars, shops and tourists. Many notable buildings including de Nieuwe Kerk, the National Monument and the Royal Palace of Amsterdam are also located here. Anne Frank Huis Take a step back in time for a humbling visit to the Anne Frank Huis in de Jordaan neighbourhood. Museum visitors will literally walk in the young girl’s footsteps through the apartment where she hid with her family before being sent to a concentration camp during World War II. The house-turned-museum features many of the family’s personal possessions, including the diary where Anne chronicled her experiences during her time in the house. The Rjiksmuseum Amsterdam has no shortage of galleries and museums, and the Rijksmuseum is by far the most popular in the whole country. The famous art museum features works from many Dutch greats including Van Gogh, Vermeer and Rembrandt, plus Delftware, dollhouses and many more of the nation’s most impressive cultural artefacts. The Canal Belt There’s a reason why the Netherlands – and Amsterdam in particular – is known for canals. The city’s four most famous canals were constructed in the seventeenth century and have been featured in photographs of the town ever since. Now a UNESCO Heritage Site, the Canal Belt is a great place to relax at a bar or café and watch people sail by on boats. Get Ready to Go Make your adult weekends totally stress-free by leaving the booking details to the travel experts. Amsterdam is full of sights, sounds and plenty of things to do. You won’t be able to fit it all into one trip (or one weekend!), but that’s what makes it such an exciting place to visit during your cruise through the Netherlands.
