There’s no denying that superhero movies have dominated the box office for the better part of the last two decades. Some people feel that the market on these films has been saturated for some time, whereas others can’t get enough. Movie studios, of course, are choosing focus on the latter. Here are a few superhero films to look forward to in 2019: Hellboy — Even though Hellboy movies have been wildly popular, it has been ten years since the last installment. Fans of the franchise have been foaming at the mouth wondering when exactly the follow-up film would be coming. For a lot of fans, though, their dreams were dashed when the franchise’s original director & main lead actor opted out. However, the news and information about the Hellboy reboot has really gotten people excited, with popular actor David Harbour taking on the role of Hellboy. X-Men: Dark Phoenix — This is the sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse, with events for Phoenix coming about a decade after Apocalypse. The character of Jean Grey is the focus of the film, with greater attention being given to the inner turmoil she attempts to keep subdued. Fans of the X-Men comic books, no doubt, know exactly where the turmoil will lead, and it is one of the most beloved, and often divisive, storylines in the franchise. Now, moviegoers will get a chance to bask in its grandeur. Little is known about the movie, but details are only a click away. Captain Marvel — This movie takes the audience back to the mid-90s and stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. She becomes one of the mightiest heroes known in the Marvel Universe, but as with any superhero, she begins to question who she is, where she came from, and what she’s all about. Fans are excited about this movie, especially after the success of Wonder Woman. Details about the movie are slowly becoming public, but the latest trailer really tells a compelling story about a hero coming into her own. Joker — The role of The Joker has been taken on by a number of actors over the course of decades. There were the sillier versions as in the case of Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson, and Jared Leto famously took the character in a very visually-stirring direction. Of course, the late Heath Ledger probably cemented himself as the ultimate portrayal of this Batman villain. Joaquin Phoenix is now taking the helm of the latest incarnation, and while details are sparse, initial photos of Phoenix with & without make-up are really promising. Wonder Woman 1984 — Not a lot is known about this film just yet, which really has fans both nervous and ridiculously excited. What is known is that there will be a storyline based on the Cold War years of the 1980s. Needless to say, Wonder Woman was a massive worldwide box office smash, so the bar is set pretty high for this sequel. Gal Gadot will be back as the titular heroine, with Patty Jenkins also coming back to direct. The one detail that seems to be fanning the fanboy fires for this movie is the return of our hero’s love interest. What? In all honesty, superhero movies are really a lot of fun. The characters are familiar, and the storylines resonate with us in one way or another. Even if we miss a detail or two here and there, we’re not too scared of being completely out of the loop. These types of movies are meant to entertain, which is really what going to the movies is all about. Sure, you can get bogged down with nuanced, avant-garde films that will leave you thinking weeks later, but don’t you want to just have a good time at a movie theater? As such, look forward to 2019 because some really great movies are on the horizon. For all first-run superhero movies in Albuquerque ABQ, make your way over to Flix Brewhouse today!
