What You Should Know Before Getting Your First Forearm Tattoo

Art and Culture,Self Improvement,Advice
Getting a tattoo is a rather special time because you are embarking on quite the journey that will take you from just ‘a guy’ or ‘a girl’ to becoming part of the body art and modification world. There are a lot of directions you can go for such a momentous occasion, but in the event that you’ve decided on getting a forearm, there is quite a lot you’ll need to know about forearm tattoos before showtime.

Even if you have tattoos elsewhere on your body, deciding to ink up your forearm is a big step in making your acceptance & love for custom ink come to the forefront. If you’re still not sure, here are a few things you should know about forearm tattoos:

Pain/Sensitivity — Depending on where you get a tattoo, your forearm tends to have some of the most sensitive spots on your entire body. Keep in mind that sensitivity can mean everything from feeling every pulse from the tattoo machine or being uncontrollably ticklish to feeling excruciating pain. The insides of wrists and elbow creases tend to be real nightmares, as is the elbow itself.

Sitting Time & Multiple Sessions — Sometimes a design is quick and easy, but if you’re getting a pretty involved tattoo design, you may be in the chair for hours. This can lead to fatigue for both you and your artist. You may have to break things up into multiple sessions, and again, each session may go for a long time.

Artist Experience — When it comes to efficiency in how long you sit, how you feel while you sit, and whether you feel pain, much of the experience you will have in getting a tattoo on your forearm will be based on the amount of experience your artist has. Tattoo artists are just like any other craftsman/artist out there, and years of experience allow them to know how to work with different individuals.

Wardrobe Changes — Do you work in public education or in public services? Are you involved in corporate America? Forearm tattoos, when visible, are usually a “no-no” for certain jobs. Sure, you can have them, but you’ll have to hide them. Consider the changes you’ll need to make to your wardrobe based on where your new tattoo is located.

“Are You Sure?” — This seems like common sense, but always ask yourself this question before anything you do, but certainly when considering a permanent decision like a forearm tattoo.

Nowadays, forearm tattoos are cool, edgy, and have slowly become a fairly acceptable part of society. Still, no matter what gains have been made by the body art and modification world, there will probably always be a bit of a stigma that comes with custom ink on such a visible area of your body. For example, you may have to start thinking about just what changes to make in your life so as to maintain dress codes for work. No matter your reasoning for getting your first forearm tattoo, take the time to become familiar with an artist and a studio, and always remember that your ink is permanent.
