Seven Secrets You Didn't Know About Superhero Movies

Entertainment,Art and Culture
We’ve had superhero movies in the conversation of modern cinema for so long that we tend to forget there was a time when there weren’t that many of these movies around. The main reason you didn’t see these types of films was simple — no one did a good job of it. Sure, once in a while, a decent enough job was done with a superhero adaptation, but chances were always high that any shot at making a “Caped Crusader” movie happen was bound to fail.

We know the main characters, understand a bit of the general story, and in the end, we’ll either get closure or a surefire sign that a sequel will be on its way in a couple of years. As it turns out, we’re nothing more than jaded moviegoers who might find it hard to hear that there are still secrets to superhero movies we were in the dark about.

Here are seven things about superhero movies you didn’t know:

Small Details Matter — We’re usually focused on a major plot twist or well-choreographed fight scene that we tend to ignore the actual movie set in the background. As it turns out, some directors will have languages created that serve as the basis for physical details during filming. Not quite Easter eggs, these details give scenes a ton of texture & weight.

Sign of the Times — Most superhero movies come at a time when the real world could use a “good guy” to make things better. The hero is able to circumvent societal limitations and can act accordingly to remedy a situation. However, they act from a moral high ground, something most of us couldn't do.

Reimagining vs Remake — There is a fine line between these two ideas, and filmmakers are often too scared to commit to one because of the backlash that could come from a fan-base. Rather, they’ll leave it to the fans to clash over the reason for a superhero to come back to theaters.

Star Power is Hard to Balance — Making a movie with no-name actors usually means a movie will make no money or won’t be made at all. That said, big-name actors want their face everywhere, and in a world where masks & secret identities are necessary, tweaks to the character are based on riding this line.

Necessary Psychology — This genre of movie finally hit pay-dirt when the focus was put on the internal struggle of its heroes rather than on chiseled physiques & action sequences.

Judex — Over 100 years ago, a movie was made featuring this character who, in many respects, was a precursor, and massive influence, to the Batman character, as well as other heroes to come.

Better Left Alone — Fans are usually pushing for their favorite superhero to get their own movie, but as it turns out, that character may have had a film in development for years with nothing coming from it. Why? If you can’t make the movie right, it’s best to leave it alone. Too much risk.

Perhaps the lesson to take away from the onslaught of superhero movies that we’ve seen in the last two decades is that even though we think we’ve seen, and know, it all, we’ve only scratched the surface, which leaves the door open to be left in awe again and again.
