Given that Croydon is a London borough, residents of the area clearly don't have to travel far for a wide array of top-drawer experiences. In fact, they don't even necessarily have to leave the borough itself, as there are plenty of exciting goings-on locally when they are Living In Croydon. Fairfield Halls This arts complex, which first opened in 1962, is effectively three venues in one. These are a concert hall with a 1,801-seat capacity; the 755-seat Ashcroft Theatre, named after legendary thespian Dame Peggy Ashcroft; and the Arnhem Gallery for small standing concerts. A glittering array of stars has lit up Fairfield Halls, ranging from country music legend Kenny Rogers and world-conquering rock outfits Queen, Status Quo and Genesis tothe incomparable Stevie Wonder. While Fairfield Halls is unfortunately temporarily closed, it is set to reopen as part of a stunning new Croydon cultural quarter in 2018. Croydon Clocktower This building is quite remarkable for its architectural look alone; it is somewhat akin to a Croydon-based Big Ben. However, there is a lot going on inside its walls, as it includes a technologically sophisticated library, the town museum and the small, art house-style David Lean Cinema. 46 South End For music-loving history buffs living in Croydon, this shop can be a real find. It is, in fact, Croydon's oldest surviving shop, having been built in the 16th century with many Tudor features that have remained intact to this day. Records show that the building has been a shop since at least 1851. The shop currently occupying the building - having done so since 1985 - is Just Flutes, a music retailer that specialises in brass and woodwind. Visiting could give you a valuable opportunity to check out the original timber framing. The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology When you choose to live at the ISLAND accommodation complex, you will also have this educational institution close by. Many big-name music acts have been students here, including Adele, Jessie J, Rizzle Kicks, Leona Lewis and Katie Melua. It is clear, then, that Croydon's attractions have a particularly strong musical flavour – but there really is something for everyone in this so-often unsung part of London. You can appreciate this for yourself when you start living in Croydon, having secured your own dream ISLAND apartment or penthouse.
