Best for Self-Catering Holidays? Dorset

Travel & Tourism
For larger families in search of somewhere suited to self-catering holidays, Dorset is a place that really fits the bill. The wide range of attractions and activities on offer means that there’s something for everyone, and there’s a variety of resorts available to suit every need.

Accommodation

Deciding where to stay is the first step when arranging self-catering holidays. Dorset fortunately boasts an incredible range of holiday parks with accommodation to fit any family’s budget and requirements, so you’re sure to find something that’s right for you. If you know that your group would prefer to spread out and have their own room, why not rent a few caravans to keep everyone happy? The family can spend their days together and return to their own spaces later on. Caravans are available in several sizes, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one that suits your party’s size. If you’re looking for accommodation for more of a close-knit group, there are also lodges, cottages and apartments available in some of Dorset’s great holiday parks. These offer far more sleeping capacity than caravans, along with ensuring that you have spacious living areas that are ideal for socialising and eating together. Regardless of whether you’re staying in a caravan, a cottage or a lodge, you’ll generally find a fully equipped kitchen, which is ideal for self-catering holidays. Dorset also tends to have a good amount of on-site amenities and activities on offer in its resorts, which is particularly helpful on family holidays: after all, everyone might have different ideas of what they’d like to do. Some members of the family can head out on an active excursion or visit a cultural attraction while others relax at the resort – this sort of flexibility ensures that everyone is happy.

Days Out

There are countless attractions in Dorset that are perfect for family visits. The coastal town of Poole is a particular favourite, with lots of things to do and see. Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of the place – kids and adults alike will love learning about Poole’s nautical heritage, rich with tales of pirates and smugglers. A free visit to Poole Museum is a great starting point, and the self-guided Cockle Trail also offers a look into the past as you follow the numbered plaques through the Old Town. If the younger members of the group are always on their phones, you could also follow the Poole Trail, where you can use scannable codes on plaques to load up sounds, videos and photos on a smartphone. The bustling Poole Quay is definitely worth a visit too. Here you can watch boats arriving and leaving, or even take a trip out onto the waves yourself. While there are a range of cruises around the harbour on offer, you could also head further afield with a journey to Swanage or Old Harry Rocks. Corfe Castle, an incredible ruin that looks out over the Purbeck landscape, is another favourite. Adults will find it a striking piece of history and kids will be able to let their imagination run free as they explore the remnants of the fortress. With plenty to entertain everyone, and superb resorts suited perfectly to self-catering holidays, Dorset is an ideal spot for your family getaway.
