Travelling from Stuttgart Airport

Travel & Tourism
Stuttgart Airport is a major transport hub, providing access to a range of cities across the southwest of Germany for more than 10 million passengers every year.

Serving much more than just the city from which it takes its name, the airport provides access to important business and cultural cities, including Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Strasbourg.

Much of the air traffic comes from domestic flights, but the airport also serves more than 700,000 Spanish, 600,000 Turkish and 500,000 British travellers each year. Thanks to the large number of business hubs and cultural centres in Stuttgart and the surrounding area, both business and tourist travellers make use of the airport.

Those arriving here can take Shuttle Direct’s Stuttgart Airport taxis into the city, or take the opportunity to discover the other cities in this historic region.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg is nestled in the valley of the Neckar River, and is only 88km from the airport – a short, 80-minute drive with a Stuttgart Airport taxi.

Heidelberg is a compact medieval city, and is easily explored by foot. Whether you want to wander the narrow cobbled streets of the Old Town, – which dates back to the thirteenth century – discover Germany’s oldest university, or take in the beautiful Baroque architecture, there is plenty to see. With its stunning landscape and beautiful buildings, Heidelberg inspired Germany’s poets to describe it as the “City of Romanticism”.

But there is much more to Heidelberg than its past. Today the modern and vibrant university town has a bustling cultural scene, including music and literary festivals, excellent theatre and a number of great restaurants, bars and cafés.

Karlsruhe

Just 69km – or less than an hour – away from the airport, Karlsruhe is the cultural heart of the southwest, housing more than 50 museums, galleries and theatres in its compact, fan-shaped centre.

The excellent restaurant scene offers visitors the chance to sample some delicious local cuisine, including the traditional Maultaschen (filled pasta) or Ofenschlupfer (a tasty desert).

Thanks to its vibrant student population, you can also expect a lively nightlife scene, which consists of bustling bars, cafés and clubs.

Strasbourg

Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region, is a mere 108km away from Stuttgart Airport. Taxis can take you there in less than two hours.

Despite looking like a typical German town, Strasbourg has actually been fought over by France and Germany throughout its existence, until it was finally awarded to France after the First World War.

This unusual cultural identity gives the medieval city a fascinating ambience, which is part German and part French.

Strasbourg is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site: the Grande Ile, which manages to combine sixteenth- and seventeenth-century architecture with the modern, cutting-edge design of buildings like the European Parliament and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. This juxtaposition of old and new makes it a fascinating city to explore.

Strasbourg also has a rich gastronomic culture, serving traditional Alsace cuisine in many of its lively restaurants.

I think you’ll agree that Stuttgart Airport is more than just a city transport hub, providing a genuine gateway to this fascinating region.
