Study skills that don't involve studying? That sounds a bit crazy. But the truth is that studying is first about your mental attitude and then about the material. Study all day long with a negative attitude and your studying will be for nothing. But, study with a positive mental attitude and it may seem like you aren't studying at all. I am suggesting three positive ways to tweak your attitude. One, some or all of these almost guarantee a positive mental attitude. 1: Give Yourself a Treat Treats come in many forms. I like coffee, four shots of espresso over ice to be precise. A friend of mine always has a bag of M&M's by her side when studying. Others I know take a walk around the library in the winter. On warmer spring and fall days the walk outside. Whatever you do to take your mind off studying if only for a minute or two has a positive effect on your attitude. 2: Meditate Whether you chant Om, breath deeply or sit quietly, meditation works to tune up your attitude. Before sitting down to study a friend of mine says, "I've done this before. I can do it again." He does this into a mirror looking himself right in the eye. Another colleague of mine in graduate school went for a 15 minute run before sitting down with his books. Meditation, sitting quietly and listening to the universe or physical activity or both has a positive impact on attention. With such a boost one is likely to recall more of what one learns than if not done. 3: Don't Study All at Once Take breaks. This sounds like a strange study skill but it is effective. Plan your study sessions. I believe that one should not study more than three hours with 2 ten-minute breaks at a time. During that time you should study more than one subject but not more than three. It is conceivable that you could study three hours in the morning, three in the late afternoon and three more at night. A total of nine hours a day in three hour chunks. The point is that by breaking the work into meaningful segments, you are increasing your retention quotient. Smaller, in the case of study, is always better. Putting it all Together What I am suggesting here is that before you study it pays to pay attention to yourself. It is sound practice to find ways to treat yourself to improve your mental attitude. Meditation reduces that anxious sense that is overwhelming you. It also increased your attention span. Both are good for your mental attitude. Planning to segment study into small chunks is one way to boost retention over time. In short, treat yourself the way you want to be treated. The dividends you receive will be worth the effort.
