The quality of your life depends on quite a few things--what kind eating habits you have, if you exercise or not, your hygiene habits, and last but not least, how you sleep at night. The way that you sleep at night won't only affect you during the night, but throughout your day as well! Sleeping well at night doesn't only fix or prevent dark circles around your eyes, but boosts your mood throughout your day. The amount of health benefits that you can receive from getting a proper and restful night of sleep would surprise you. Some people have a more difficult time sleeping throughout the night than others. If this is the case for you, sleep medicine in Birmingham might be a helpful option for you. 

Improve Your Memory

Believe it or not, your mind stays incredibly busy while you're asleep. Through a process called consolidation, your mind can strengthen memories and "practice" skills that you learned throughout your day during sleep. Whenever you make an attempt to learn something, your brain will pick up on the skill through practice. Practice is actually how you master any skill. Although for some reason, your brain learns and reviews the skill better during sleep. Overall, if you're trying to learn a new skill, your brain will learn quicker and respond better once you have slept.

Longer Life Span

In 2010, a study was done that showed more women died between the ages of 50 and 79 who got 5 or less hours of sleep at night. Too much or too little sleep has been associated with a longer or shorter life span for several years, although it wasn't clear which one was the cause and which one was the effect. Illnesses found in people between 50 and 79 years old can also affect their sleeping patterns. 

Stimulate Creativity

When you get a full night's rest, you will have increased creativity the next day. If you're a writer but you've had terribly bad increased levels of writer's block lately, maybe it's because you aren't getting enough sleep at night! If you're an artist who can't seem to come up with any painting ideas, you should lay down and sleep before you bring out the next easel. During sleep, your brain seems to restructure and rearrange your memories, which has been shown to increase creativity. 

Prevent Inflammation

Different diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and stroke have all been linked to inflammation. All of these diseases can seriously affect your life in a negative way. Studies have shown that people who get less than six and a half hours of sleep at night are more likely to get inflammation. In fact, they have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins than those who get more than six and a half hours of sleep at night. People with sleep apnea or insomnia have shown to have an improvement in blood pressure and inflammation after sleep disorder treatments such as sleep medicine in Birmingham.
