When summer hits, it’s time to get outside. When it comes time to grab the family and pick a destination, chances are good most of the kids won’t want to spend the day inside a museum. While there’s plenty of time to explore the rich cultural heritage of Georgia, there are certain sights that might sound more appealing during the hot summer months, like summer beach sunsets in Atlanta. Some of those cultural sites are outside, fortunately, so for older kids or anyone who might appreciate that heritage, now’s the time to hit the walking trails of historic sites and monuments like the Fort Pulaski National Monument. While this is a good stand-in for historical museums, art museums are a little harder to duplicate in the outdoors. Instead, it might be worthwhile to look for some natural beauty in the Atlanta History Center or the Atlanta Botanical Garden. For something a little more exciting, visitors can always turn to the wide selection of theme parks and water parks peppering the state. Parks like the Wild Adventures Theme Park and Six Flags Over Georgia might be fun places to get some adrenaline pumping, while Summer Waves Water Park, Six Flags White Water, and other wetter attractions provide good ways to cool down. There are other water-related attractions in the state, too, such as the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, which also happens to be close to Zoo Atlanta, another popular destination for kids on vacation. Beaches, of course, are a traditional source of summer fun that can be enjoyed all along the state. Both the beaches of large lakes and those along the Atlantic coast can offer sand and water to play in and relax on. Even though there are many lakes to choose from, a careful search can turn up sites like the lakeside beaches at Callaway Gardens that offer a fine summer beach sunset in Atlanta, as well as water skiing and other activities.
