The Firehouse This is perhaps the most memorable of all the locations for shooting Ghostbusters. In reality, the firehouse building on 14 North Moore Street and Varick Street was built in 1903 and belongs to the Hook and Ladder Company #8. The actual firemen there are known to be pretty friendly, and although the outside was included in the film, all of the scenes that take place inside of the firehouse in the film were actually created at a separate location. The building in the film was actually taller, with 27 floors for dramatic effect, but the real life Spook Central building is much smaller, with just 19. If you look, you’ll notice that the church building next to it that gets crushed in the film is still standing. New York Public Library This is a popular filming location in New York, having been featured since the release of Ghostbusters in movies like The Day After Tomorrow. Although the beautiful building is featured in the film, the interior scenes—which got a little messy—were recorded in the Los Angeles Central Library instead. The building itself has a fascinating history, and is a beauty to behold. Rockefeller Center The story goes that the director couldn’t get permission to film on this location. So, instead, they pretended ignorance. Director Ivan Reitman said once in an interview, “We just pulled up in two vans, and I said to the guys, ‘Run all the way down there, and when you get to the end, just start running back.’” By a great stroke of luck, they snagged some good shots before the security guards figured out what they were doing. Once again, he feigned ignorance to the guards, they left, and the shots of the bronze Prometheus statue remained in the film.
