Groundskeepers tend to both residential and commercial landscapes by cutting grass, removing weeds and leaves, trimming shrubs and trees, and planting gardens. But many groundskeepers who work for community landscape services in Atlanta focus on residential communities governed by homeowners’ associations rather than single-family homes. Though the tasks are often the same, the scale is quite different. One significant difference between attending to single-family homes and residential communities is the removal of leaves. In the former situation, leaves are often mulched using a special mower, and in the latter, leaves are usually removed, often using a tool called a leaf blower. Ratings Miles per hour, or MPH ratings, indicate how quickly air escapes out of a leaf blower’s nozzle—decreasing with larger nozzles and increasing with smaller ones. Cubic feet per minute, or CFM rating, tends to be more accurate and a better indicator of power. Nozzle types vary from flat to round, where flat nozzles have higher MPH ratings but lower CFM ratings and round nozzles just the opposite. Leaf blowers that have a higher CFM rating are usually the more expensive handheld blowers and as the CFM rating increases are associated with heavy-duty backpack and walk-behind blowers. Handheld Electric Blower Ideal for working in small areas, handheld electric blowers are compact in size and lighter in weight than gas-powered blowers. These blowers will start up instantly and perform far quieter. Either corded or battery powered, with various degrees of power, these models are less powerful than their gas-powered cousins. Handheld Gas-Powered Blower A handheld gas-powered blower is a more powerful model compared to the electric types, is more controllable, slightly heavier, and more expensive. It also requires fuel mixing and engine maintenance. However, as a handheld model, it’s still more practical for residential rather that commercial applications. Gas-Powered Backpack Blower Backpack blowers are ideally suited for larger areas due to their power and maneuverability. These models typically weigh twice as much as a handheld gas-powered blower and are carried around in a harness on the back to handle the weight. The higher the CFM output, the far less amount of time that will be spent cleaning up leaves. Self-Propelled Push Blower Pushed like a lawn mower, a self-propelled leaf blower is the most powerful blower on the market and obviously made for use in a large residence or for commercial use. It blows debris with excessive power and speed but its weight makes this kind of blower somewhat difficult to maneuver. However, due to its high CFM rating, it’s best for large applications. Most groundskeepers with community landscape services in Atlanta will use one of these blower models.
