Any pool owner knows that there are all sorts of supplies that one can purchase for their pool, from the arcane to the essentials. However, when it comes to those necessary items, the top of anyone’s list will consist of those chemicals needed to maintain a clean pool. There are many retailers where one can buy pool supplies in The Woodlands, but the most important item that should always be kept at hand is a pool water test kit. Management of the pool water’s chemistry is important in order to maintain a safe and healthy pool environment and therefore testing should be done frequently. Several kinds of test kits are available but all basically test the water for alkalinity, chlorine, pH, and calcium. Strips Strips are quick and easy to use. They work by dipping a strip into the pool water and churning it back and forth to allow the water to react with pads on the strip. Each pad tests for a different chemical which changes the color of the pad. Due to the technology or user error in color matching, this method tends not to be as accurate. However, the advantage for test strips is that they are less complicated and therefore much easier to use. Liquid There are two types of liquid tests—comparison and titration—and both produce a more precise result. Comparison tests require filling a vial with a sample of pool water, adding drops of the test reagent, and then comparing the color in the vial to the color in a corresponding column. Titration tests are the more accurate of the two because they don’t rely on visual color matching to determine the result. Instead, these tests require filling a vial with a water sample, adding an indicator solution, and finally mixing the solution. The titrant is then added drop by drop and the user counts the number of drops it takes to make the color change completely. Digital Recently, three types of digital testing kits have come on the market as self-contained units that can interface with online databases. Digital meter kits are hand-held, battery-operated devices that use internal software and metallic probes to measure some but not all water chemicals. Photometric scanners use a spectrophotometer and internal software to calculate results. A vial of pool water and a reagent is inserted and the hand-held scanner does the rest. Digital strip readers are photometric readers that make precise readings from the comparison pads on special test strips that work with a digital strip reader. The strip is inserted into the reader and it takes over from there. All of these test kits, along with the chemicals needed to maintain a clean pool, are available at quality retailers who sell pool supplies in The Woodlands.
