Choosing a destination for a family holiday can be challenging. Instead of your typical fly-and-flop vacations, I always prefer adventurous holidays which combine fun activities with beautiful surroundings. One family-friendly destination that I like to recommend to my clients is Martinhal, Portugal. Here, you will find a rugged part of the Western Algarve which is perfect for exploring, plus you can try your hand at dozens of fun activities such as surfing, diving and fishing. As an idea of what a kid friendly holiday in Portugal consists of, here is a typical itinerary that we can arrange for you. Day 1 Collect your rental car upon arrival and enjoy the scenic drive down the coast to the Western Algarve. After checking in, get settled in your brilliant split level private Grand Ocean House with stunning ocean views. Stroll out onto the beach for an early evening walk before celebrating your holiday with a delicious meal. Day 2 Fresh and raring to go in the morning, explore the local area with a fun family bike ride (guided or unguided) which will give you terrific views of the unspoilt natural surroundings. After lunch, take a well-deserved dip in one of the five swimming pools or perhaps play a game of family football, take a yoga class, or simply relax and enjoy the view from anywhere in the resort. Day 3 Day 3 is the perfect time for some action. Head up the stunning coastline where you can attend a surf lesson at the excellent Future Surfing School (available for kids from 6 years old), or, if you are already experienced, you can hire a board and spend the day riding the waves on the dramatic and stunning coastline. Alternatively, head out to sea on a thrilling dolphin watching or fishing trip - an excellent activity for a kid friendly holiday. In Portugal, and this area in particular, Dolphins, Blue Sharks, Sun-fish and Hammer-head Sharks can all be spotted. Day 4 Spend the day exploring the breathtaking coastline with a bike ride along the coast to the picturesque lighthouse at Cape St Vincent, before enjoying tasty local cuisine at the magnificent ‘A Sagres’ Portuguese restaurant. Other options include playing a round of golf or game of tennis, horse riding or a stunning and rewarding hike in the National Park (be sure to bring a camera). Day 5 Back into the water for day 5 and a thrilling day of water sports! Paddleboards, windsurfing, body boarding and diving are all terrific options, plus you can get all the support, equipment and lessons you need to get started. This could be followed by a delicious seafood lunch at the wonderful ‘As Dunas’, before a leisurely evening spent lounging on the sandy beach and paddling in the blue waters. Day 6 Your last day will need to be a memorable one, so I recommend taking a mesmerising family kayaking tour of the bay. Next, traditional Portuguese cuisine at ‘O Terraco’ will prove to be an exceptional and memorable meal on your last day. A dip in the pool and relaxing around the resort, or perhaps participating in the beach games at the Watersport Centre, are all great ways to spend your final evening. Day 7 Pack and enjoy breakfast on your balcony before heading along the coast and back to the airport.
