With the warm weather, most healthy trees are in full bloom. If your tree isn't, it may be sick. Sap-feeding beetles carry the spores to other oak trees where infections fester in open wounds in the tree bark. All species of oak are susceptible to the disease but while other species may recover, an infected red oak tree will die within a month of the first symptoms. One of the most obvious signs of oak wilt is chlorotic veins. The veins running through the center of a live oak leaf will turn yellow and eventually brown. The tree will also defoliate at an alarming rate. Hypoxylon Canker This form of canker takes the form of lesions on the outside of the tree trunk. The infection starts under the bark causing it to fall or peel off in chunks. Canker is usually the result of stress. Trees can suffer stress just like humans, only their stress is usually the result of severe weather changes. Long periods of drought, for example, can bring on stress. Extensive bark loss will likely result in the removal of the entire tree. Root Rot Root rot is the result of a wood-loving fungus that festers around root tissues and feeder roots under the ground. Rot can also be a sign of a more serious disease that could be killing your tree. However, most rot is caused by poor drainage or over-watering.
