Hey there guys and welcome back for another week for random anime awesomeness! This week we are going to be taking a look at an anime series that falls into the supernatural category. The anime, Charlotte, is set in a world where adolescents are mysteriously gaining supernatural powers at random. There is no way to tell who will gain such powers or when they will get them, every person is different. The only common ground is that the powers fade whenever the teenagers transition into adulthood, usually around the time they graduate high school. These mystical powers can range from anything such as incredible speed, to the ability of finding others who have special abilities as well. The anime takes us on a journey of a group of such teenagers with these supernatural powers, that are trying to make a difference and save the lives of others by having them conceal their gifts. Why hide their powers? Organizations across the world are looking to harvest these young people, and their powers, to either use them or experiment on them in order to find out how they are using such powers. In order to remain safe, everyone must either hide their power, or band together. Our story's main protagonist is a boy named Yuu, and based off of the first few episodes, he's not much of a "good guy." He has the power to take over any person for around five seconds, to which he uses for his own self gain. He uses his powers to cheat on tests and raise his grades, as well as purposely cause accidents that then benefit him. He has no sense of righteousness at the beginning of this show, that is, until he meets a couple of other people with powers. A boy named Takajo and a girl named Nao are the ones that discover him, but they were looking for him. They are part of a school council at a school that harbors those with special powers, or those thought to gain powers. Their goal is simple: find others with powers and make them stop using it, and if necessary, make them transfer to the school. Yuu is eventually convinced to transfer after being chased down and getting hit butt kicked by a girl, and thus starts his life at a new school, and also, a student council member. The student council members are the only ones that are permitted to use their powers, since they are tracking down those with powers, they sometimes have to take them by force. What I really love about this anime is that for the first half of the season you think you have everything figured out. You think it is just going to be another one of these comedy, slice of life, school anime shows that just has a random thing that they do every episode. Rest assured, that will all change once you get to the second half of the season. This series, at least in my opinion, holds one of the greatest plot twists that I have ever experienced, and it is fantastic. For comparison, Gurrenn Lagann seemed like a comedic, fun anime show up until the death of a main character, at which point you were forced back to reality and realized that the show was getting serious. Charlotte is a lot like that in getting the viewer back down to earth. The show allows you to laugh and be happy for a time being, and then it jerks you around like a roller coaster. It's also worth mentioning that this show has one of the best love confessions that I've ever experienced as well, quite well done. All in all, I think it would be worth while for anyone to give this anime series a shot. If you are wanting to dive into a good story, that unfortunately only lasts a short while, then this anime is for you. In fact, the only complaint that I have about this show is that it is so short. The last episode itself could have been made into an entire separate season, but I guess that's how these things go. Give it a shot, I know I'm glad I did.
