Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been given increasing attention in the media and society over the past decade. What exactly is autism spectrum disorder? Before looking into treatments for autism spectrum disorder in Salt Lake City, it's important to learn more about what ASD is, how it is diagnosed, and how it can be treated. Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism spectrum disorder is a term that represents a range of conditions that are classified as neurodevelopmental disorders according to the latest edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Included in this collection of conditions are autism and Asperger syndrome. General features of ASD include social deficits, difficulty with communication, sensory issues, and cognitive delays. Individuals with ASD also demonstrate stereotyped, restricted, or repetitive behaviors, interests, and daily activities. These deficits typically present in early childhood, but may present later in adolescence. Diagnosis Diagnosis is a tricky process since individuals with ASD can present in many different ways with different combinations of symptoms. The DSM-5 has set forth criteria to be diagnosed with ASD. Children as young as 12 to 18 months can be diagnosed, but typically a reliable diagnosis is common by age 2. Some individuals may not be diagnosed until much later due to later onset of characteristics or lack of awareness of deficits. Typically, a child will go through several evaluations by different doctors and psychologists for a diagnosis to be confirmed. Several evidence-based outcome measures are typically used to help in the diagnosis. Treatment There is no "cure" for ASD. Instead, treatment goals are to lessen deficits, increase quality of life, and increase independence. This is typically done through a combination of applied behavior analysis, structured teaching, speech language therapy, occupational or physical therapy, and more. Outcomes vary based on the individual, intensity of intervention, IQ of the individual, family support, etc. With the proper treatment and support, individuals with autism spectrum disorder in Salt Lake City often show progress in their lives.
