The quaint village of Catlin, with just over 2,000 residents and covering less than a square mile, is located in the Danville, Illinois, Metropolitan Statistical Area, two hours south of Chicago in Vermilion County. Catlin was originally called Butler's Point, named after James Butler who arrived here in 1820, to build a cabin, put in a crop, and eventually establish a cemetery. Some years later, in March of 1856, the Great Western Railroad agreed to maintain a station stop in the village and since the railroad’s president, J. M. Catlin, was the person responsible for creating the station, the townspeople renamed the village in his honor. Given its close proximity to the primary campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign to the west and its much larger neighbor, Danville, to the east, Catlin offers a more affordable place to live and commute to either—especially considering the availability of construction loans in Catlin, Illinois. Tranquility and Convenience The community’s motto is “large enough to serve you but small enough to know you!” The motto certainly reflects the rich farming history of the area; however, Catlin also is the gateway to the beautiful recreation area of Kickapoo State Park. Located only a few miles to the south of the park, Catlin is an ideal place for outdoor enthusiasts looking to build their homes in one of the most scenic regions in central Illinois. With average home prices under $60,000, it’s also one of the most affordable places to live in the entire state. Throughout its long history, Catlin has been considered more a place where people raised their families rather than create businesses, thus making this an idyllic location for those looking for a bucolic and tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Surrounded by farmland, and being so close to Kickapoo State Park, and bearing in mind that construction loans in Catlin, Illinois are readily available, it makes perfect sense for anyone who loves nature to settle down in this quaint village of 2,000 people.
