The quaint village of Catlin, with just over 2,000 residents and covering less than a square mile, is located in the Danville, Illinois, Metropolitan Statistical Area, two hours south of Chicago in Vermilion County. Catlin was originally called Butler's Point, named after James Butler who arrived here in 1820, to build a cabin, put in a crop, and eventually establish a cemetery. Some years later, in March of 1856, the Great Western Railroad agreed to maintain a station stop in the village and since the railroad’s president, J. M. Catlin, was the person responsible for creating the station, the townspeople renamed the village in his honor.
