This week we take a look at a growing popular anime series called The Asterisk War. This anime takes place after a global cataclysm known as the Invertia. The Invertia lead to the destruction of many cities and the rise of a new power known as the Integrated Enterprise Foundation. The formation of Asterisk, the city, is born. The city is made up of six different academies, I would name them all, but that would be boring! The only one you need to know is Seidoukan, cause they are the good guys! The city is different than you would expect, meaning, dueling is encouraged. The city has several large arenas used to host tournaments known as Festas, this is where the academies do battle via dueling. However, there is still dueling that happens under the radar and even in the streets. Our main character is Ayato. He has come to the city to search for his sister, who abandoned the household years before. He is also here on a personal request by the student body council president of Seidoukan, Claudia. She convinces him to transfer to the school even after showing what miserably little information they had on his sister. Imagine that, their information was "corrupted" and no one can even say whether or not she attended the school. As being a requested transfer, Ayato gets dibs on checking out the school's most powerful weapons, but only if he is able to sync with it. Of course he grabs the most powerful one and, you guessed it, syncs right up. The rest of the story mainly focuses around the upcoming Festa, in which Ayato agrees to enter with a former rival and new found partner, Julis. Julis is a first page rank student at the school, and is known for her fire magic. The two are joined by a couple of others that make up the harem, Saya and Kirin. Saya is a childhood friend of Ayato, and Kirin is the former number one at the school. I say former because Ayato, you guessed it, beats her. So is this just another action packed anime that has an over powered main character that has a harem that follows him? Yes! It certainly is. I am not sure why this anime is becoming so popular, it doesn't have anything unique. The story line is bleh, he is searching for his sister sometimes, but most of the time he is just focused on the Festa since that's what Julis wants, and he wants to protect her. The fighting sequences are pretty amazing, but again, nothing original. It reminds me a lot of The Irregular in how the main character is crazy over powered even though he has a limiter on him, and the fact that the anime explains very little. If you are interested in this anime, its a nice anime to kick back and watch some action; however, it's a little difficult to get into the story. Action? Yes. Story? Bleh. Harem? Of course.
