For many visitors to Catalonia, the journey from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar is something of a “let’s get there ASAP” endeavour only considered at the time of an airport transfer. Yet this vibrant land is alive with magical and interesting sights that are all easily reached when travelling from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar or indeed in the other direction. Here are just a few great things to do in this beautiful area of Spain. Parc Serralada Litoral This is an enchanting part of the countryside and it’s just a short distance to the north of Barcelona. Its name translates to “The Serralada Coastal Park” and it’s a preserved area of green rolling countryside with spectacular views. However, it is even more than beautiful scenery. The authorities have worked hard to preserve the cultural identity and history of the entire area including local towns and villages. This is the perfect contrast for those who have experienced Spain as a land of beaches and desert-like interiors. It’s more reminiscent of the landscape in Devon or Cornwall and is well worth a detour if you’re travelling from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar. Mataró Again, just a little to the north of Barcelona and en route to Lloret de Mar, the city of Mataró offers a fascinating and enticing blend of the old and new Spain. Set on the coast, it has the beautiful marina, stunning beaches and great fish restaurants that you might associate with modern Spain. Yet this is far from a modern city and in fact it has a history going back into the Roman period. The old town is full of charming buildings and quaint streets. In fact the church in fact was constructed, in part, on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa. A Beach Diversion If you’d like to see some great beaches with a pretty town, why not try Arenys-de-Mar as you make your way from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar? There are some lovely sands and blue seas here to enjoy but also a community based around an old fishing village. Yes, there are some modern developments but the character and charm are still there. Blanes Fish Market For something completely different, why not try the Blanes fish market? Open morning and afternoon, here you’ll see freshly caught fish being sold and preserved. The mornings tend to be busier and perhaps more oriented towards commercial larger-volume sales than private buyers. You’ll see all sorts of lovely local fish here. It’s an exotic treat if you’ve never seen a harbour-side fish market and if you love fish, why not purchase some to try on the barbeque later on once you’ve reached your final destination in Lloret de Mar? You won’t find fresher fish anywhere and if you’ve never sampled Bluefish of Swordfish, then this is your chance. This market is another example of how local Catalonia and Spain continue to seamlessly co-exist with tourism.
