Cosmetic veneers are ultra-thin shells made of ceramic or some composite resin material and they are bonded to the front of teeth. The procedure will require just a little anesthesia and is ideal for people who want to improve that appearance of their front teeth. Cosmetic veneers are normally placed as a way of masking discoloration, to improve the quality of a smile and to brighten teeth.
Cosmetic veneers provide an excellent alternative to crowns in a number of situations; they are a much more conservative approach to the desire to change the color, size and shape of a person’s teeth. They can easily mask any undesirable defects such as teeth that have been stained by tetracycline or any damage that could have occurred as a result an injury or a root canal procedure. Cosmetic veneers are ideal especially for masking any discolored filling in your front teeth. Any patient who has a gap between their front teeth or teeth that are worn or chipped may want to consider cosmetic veneers. Veneers are known to last for many years as long as the technique is performed by an expert.
A patient may need up to three appointments for the entire procedure to be completed: there is diagnosis and treatment, planning and preparation and bonding. It is very important that as a patient, you take an active role in the design of your new smile; you want to spend time planning exactly how you want your smile to look like. It is also important that you understand the limitations of the procedure and if you find it necessary, you should have more than one consultation until you are completely comfortable that the dentist has completely understood your objectives.
For your teeth to be prepared for cosmetic veneers they need to be buffed lightly so as to allow for the small thickness that will be added; this means that close to half a millimeter of your tooth will be removed which can be done under some local anesthesia. For composite resin veneers you will only need a single appointment and after the dentist has prepared the tooth, they will carefully bond and sculpt that composite material to your teeth. On the other hand, for ceramic veneers, the cosmetic dentist will take a mold of the teeth and it is sent to a laboratory where the cosmetic veneers will be fabricated. This could take a number of days but if you teeth are too unsightly, the dentist may place a temporary veneer as an additional cost as you wait for the real ones. When your ceramic veneers are finally ready, the dentist will place each veneer on its respective tooth and check whether they fit in terms of size, shape, and color.
