Compassionate and high quality nursing care is about people and definitely not about institutions. In all nursing care homes, clinics, hospitals, community service or healthcare organizations across the world, nursing, care staff, and midwifery, are dedicated to providing compassion and care to people when they are in need of it. Their mission is to help people in difficult times of uncertainty and illness and to assist patients with long-term clinical conditions to live as independently as possible.

Need for Trained Staff Dedicated, compassionate, flexible and trained care staff is essential for the smooth functioning of any nursing care home. Staff should not only possess a caring nature or an ability to give emotional support, they need to be adequately trained in the relevant field of activity.

In care homes education and training of nurses, assistants and other staff is vital for delivering high quality care and maintaining high standards. Care home staff require a variety of training. Annual mandatory training programs must include health & safety, first-aid, fire safety, handling and moving. Training necessitates creativity and adaptability to cater to diverse needs.

Things to Consider While Recruiting Staff Recruiting the right staff, who not only fit well with the team, but also, function as per expected competencies, could really be a challenging task and a critical responsibility of recruiters. Hiring right is essential for enhancing the work environment and improving patient care. But how could you shift from assessing a potential worker on paper to assessing the actual person?

Check if Certifications Are in Order In nursing care homes, it is the CNAs or the certified nursing assistants, medical attendants and orderlies who are responsible for day-to-day care. You must check the certifications and relevant documents that prove that the personal care aides are adequately trained and have the requisite certifications to work in a care home. Certifications and basic skills should be evaluated right at the beginning of the recruitment process. Do not consider an applicant who fails to pass recruitment screening.

Assess Past Work through Behavioural Interviewing Behavioural interviewing is one of the best and most effective strategies in the recruitment process. Once the desired competencies or qualities are identified, the interview questions should make the applicant talk about her contribution and performance in her previous jobs relative to those identified qualities. It is assumed that past behaviour is the best indicator of future performance.

Match the Competencies Once you have identified the required competencies, you must see if the candidate is up to the mark. Usually a recruiter should focus on job-oriented qualities and also, overall competencies including communication, teamwork, service, bilingual skills, pain management, planning, handling schedule changes or healthcare provider collaboration. If you are considering personality fit for the institution, you would be looking for someone who is outgoing, team-oriented, intellectual with calming qualities.

Background Check is Important Reference checks could be very helpful. Talk to previous employers. Try to find out as much as you can about the candidate. You should be doing a complete background check and should not be satisfied with just dates of employment.
