How to Tell if Your Furnace Is Broken

Business

To be able to tell whether your furnace is broken or not may seem like an obvious thing, but some people find that it isn’t. There are a lot of things that can go wrong in a furnace and cause it not to run properly. There are also some warning signs that might alert you to a problem before your furnace completely breaks or fails. Here are some tips on how to tell if your furnace is broken, or may be close to breaking.

Noise

The noise a furnace makes can be a good indicator of whether or not it is running properly. Furnaces are obviously not quiet appliances, but they shouldn’t be making excessive amounts of noise. If your furnace starts making noises that are unusual or starts running louder, this may be a sign that it is having problems. The noise a furnace makes when it turns on and off, or if the furnace is having significant problems turning on and off, can also be a signal to you that your furnace may be broken.

High Bill

Heat can be expensive, especially in the long, cold winter months, but the cost shouldn’t get to an astronomical level. If your heating bill has suddenly skyrocketed, it can be a sign that your furnace isn't working as it should be. When a furnace is having problems running properly, it can cause it to be very inefficient and take more energy or gas to keep it running. If your bill comes back quite a bit higher than it usually is, you may want to investigate and possibly call a professional to help you. You can find services for furnace repair in Minneapolis and many other cities.

Cold Air

If you are cranking up the heat and can barely feel a difference in temperature, it’s probably because there is something wrong with your furnace. As said before, if your furnace is having problems running correctly, it can cause it to be extremely inefficient, and therefore it won’t be able to heat air like it should be. Cold air shouldn’t be confused with drafts, as some drafts in a house are normal if it isn’t insulated well. If the temperatures in your house have suddenly dropped without a change in the thermostat, it may indicate a problem with your furnace.

Yellow Pilot Light

You can check the pilot light on your furnace if you suspect any problems, or just for routine maintenance. Furnace pilot lights should always be blue. The blue flame indicates that there is a good balance of gases in the furnace. If your pilot light is yellow, it could mean serious problems. Yellow flames are an indicator of an improper gas ratio in the furnace, which can cause excessive carbon monoxide emission and lead to possible carbon monoxide poisoning in your home. If your flame is any color aside from blue, you should call a professional to come check on your furnace.

Knowing the signs of a broken furnace, or a furnace that isn’t running correctly, can save you money in the long run. Excessive noise or weird sounds while a furnace is running can be a sign that the furnace isn’t working properly, which can lead to a high heating bill or cold temperatures in your house. You should also check your furnace pilot light if you think there may be any problems, or as a precaution. If your pilot light is yellow, you should call a professional to come check your furnace for issues. You can find professionals for furnace repair in Minneapolis and various other areas.
