A Recovering Mouth The process of extraction isn’t so bad and your recovery shouldn’t be either. The area where your tooth was pulled will probably bleed for a few hours. The doctor will stick some gauze in the area for you to bite down on and you will be sent home with some as well. This will allow you to change it every few hours so that the bleeding can slow down and it doesn’t get infected. There are some rules to follow when you get home from the procedure. Don’t drink out of a straw or smoke cigarettes. This can produce dry socket in the gum line, which can become infected and very painful. If you need to spit, and you probably will, make sure that you do it over the sink and let your saliva run out of your mouth. Spitting can also cause complications and a painful mouth. The bleeding should slow down and stop within a few hours of the extraction. You may have a difficult time eating for a day. Sip on broth or even a smoothie, but not through a straw. Use the opposite side of your mouth to chew on for a few days. It might seem uncomfortable at first, but you will get used to not having your cracked tooth in your mouth. Follow Doctor’s Orders Always follow your doctor's instructions and recommendations when you are sent home after the extraction. Any abnormal bleeding or pain should be reported within a few hours. Be sure to change the gauze and not sip through a straw. You can also take some pain relievers if you are feeling a little sore. The process is simple, safe, and very effective to get that cracked tooth removed from your mouth.
