Those who feel passionate about screenwriting and want to try their skills and talent, but simply don’t know where to start often find themselves in a difficult situation. On the one hand they may have a brilliant idea, but if it is not well-represented it the screenplay will not be as good as they initially expected. Even though there are no standard tips that someone can follow, because most successful screenplays depend on that moment of inspiration the writer had at one point, those who consider entering a playwriting competition should still take into account the following advice before starting to write. One of the first things beginner writers should do is to read the scripts of the plays they have seen and liked. It is true that seeing the actual play will help you too, but you should also take a look over its scripts, because there is so much more that you can learn from there. It will offer you a direct insight on what that writer did to make his play so successful. Another piece of advice that will come in handy once you start writing is to keep writing every day. Even if you do have a good idea, writing will not be easy and many beginner writers think that they can meet their script publishing deadline even if they postpone the writing for a few days or weeks. However, it will be much more difficult to obtain the discipline you need if you don’t make yourself to write at least one page a day. Concentration and discipline are key when it comes to writing. Furthermore, one of the key points in writing a successful screenplay is to use your strengths and not try to write something that you know for a fact you are not very good at. For instance, if you know you are not that great in writing jokes, you should avoid writing a comedy. Nothing is worse than listening to somebody who is not funny, but still tries to be. In other words, you should write what you know and what you are good at, because you will always be successful. Furthermore, before you start writing your play, you should create a clear structure in your head that it should follow. Don’t just start to write and see where it gets you, because you might end up having to throw away everything in the end, because it does not fit anything. Freeing yourself of any limitation is not necessarily a great idea and even though this technique is known to work for some successful writers such as Quentin Tarantino, it is not advisable for beginners to start this way. Last but not least, don’t forget to add a goal to every scene and don’t write just for the sake of it. Scenes that do not have any obvious goal tend to bore the audience and will not make you play as successful as you were hoping it to be.
