Greece: Sithonia's Most Visited Monasteries

Advice,Recreation & Leisure,Travel & Tourism
Your trip to Greece won't be legitly complete if you wouldn't be jumping on a day of visiting little chapels and monasteries in various islands. And you know what? Today, we will be covering our favorite pilgrim sites in Sithonia, Halkidiki. If you haven't heard Halkidiki before, now is the perfect time to get to know the safe haven that can be found in Northern Greece! You can pick from the three main regions of Kassandra, Athos, and Sithonia. Kassandra is more of the party land, Athos is full of beautiful landscape as well as vineyards while Sithonia brings you a plethora of quite small villages to visit.

In order to bring you the best pilgrim experience, we listed down some of the most visited monasteries and religious sites in Sithonia, Halkidiki.

Holy Monastery of Xiropotamos of Mount Athos

Approximately 142 km from Thessaloniki, you will find Sarti village which is the home of the Holy Monastery of Xiropotamos. It is one of the most visited monasteries in the island. It was built in the Byzantine era and have served as a refugee camp for Greeks who came all the way to Sithonia from Asia Minor. If you want to attend the Virgin Mary feast (August 15), you must time your visit on the second week of August. And from there, you will witness how Greeks celebrate one of the most significant festivals that are already part of their cultural heritage.

St. Pavlos the Apostle Church

The St. Pavlos Church is located in a tiny yet tranquil village of Nikiti, still in Sithonia Halkidiki. The church is located near Elia beach and a spring that runs pure clean water. Step up your church hopping game by going on a quick hike from Sithonia to Elia beach then to the St. Pavlos Church. Enjoy going up and down the huge rock formations. And take a good look of the view around you too. No doubt, your way to St. Pavlos might be ranked above average, yet, you can say that it was an awesome ride!

Moni Xenofondos

Technically, Moni Xenofondos is in Mount Athos, one of the peninsulas in Halkidiki. But it is a must to drop by the Moni Xenofondos when in Halkidiki. The church was said to be built in the 6th century. Moreover, the neo-classical monastery is dedicated to St. George. You will be surprised to see 11 chapels inside the monastery! Also, Moni Xenofondos keeps 4,000 printed books and 300 manuscripts inside a secured library.

Need a place to go to after some time of walking and discovering each monastery we have mentioned earlier? No worries. Halkidiki is blessed enough to have accommodating Sithonia hotels. From studios to renting Halkidiki apartments, you will find it in different towns in Sithonia. One of the best hotels we have on mind if you need a suggestion is the Nine Muses Hotel in Halkidiki! Feel the soothing ambiance of clean and comfortable studios and apartments. And oh, we almost forgot, the Nine Muses Hotel is located a few stone throw away from Kalamitsi beach! You will surely have a great time with your family and friends if you choose to stay in haven in the middle of nowhere that is Nine Muses Hotel in Halkidiki!
