You spend several hours a night sleeping. It is important to your overall health that you get the rest you need, and that your body feels comfortable and supported while doing it. A mattress can make all the difference in how well you sleep. There are no specific guidelines available for purchasing a mattress; however, because it is difficult to predict which mattress is right for you, here are some tips that can help you as you visit a bed mattress retailer. You may want to make a checklist and work your way down it for a successful purchase. Tips for Buying a Mattress - You will want to start the process by doing some research. You can look online and view sleep sites that can give you suggestions on important items to consider in a mattress. You can also reach out to your doctor or physical therapist for advice, particularly if you have a health concern. They will know your medical background and be able to give you some reliable information.
- You may have heard that a hard or firm mattress is best for your back. That is not always the case. Research has shown that a medium firm mattress is best for low back pain. You want a mattress that will support you, but not necessarily feel hard. Comfort is a critical element for your best sleep, and that is a personal preference.
- Pillow tops are also not for everyone. These mattresses have a big, thick top that is very soft. If you are a lighter weight person you may never actually compress this down to feel the support underneath it. If you are heavier, however, this may be the perfect situation, allowing you to have some additional cushion between you and the coils.
- Adjustable beds could be an option to consider. If you find that you sleep better closer to a sitting position, rather than flat on your back, this may be for you. Raising your head, knees, or both may reduce pressure on your lower back. You can also find some beds in this category that have controls for each side, so your partner can make separate adjustments.
- Although this may sound silly, you want to take a mattress for a test drive. In other words, you want to lie on a mattress in the store for at least 15 minutes. Don't feel like you can't do it because it important that you know how you feel on any given mattress. This is a big purchase and you shouldn't feel rushed in making a decision. You should try all types; firm, pillow top, and plush; you should also consider various price points.
- It is helpful if you shop at a store that specializes in mattresses. This will give you many more options, as well as a staff that will be more knowledgeable about the products they offer.
- You will want to ask about guarantees before you make a purchase. Find out if there is a money back guarantee and how long that is good for. If you get the mattress home and determine right away that you aren't going to be able to sleep comfortably on it, you want to know what your options are. Some retailers may offer a comfort guarantee as well.
- You also want to understand what kind of warranty is offered with your purchase. A good mattress will come with a 10 year full replacement warranty. Make sure that you protect your mattress as well by getting a waterproof mattress cover. Stains may void your warranty, so keep it safe right up front.
If you spend some time at a bed mattress retailer, you will be able to narrow down your options and make a choice that is right for you.
