Coats are many things: a statement piece, something to keep you warm, and something to protect you from the weather. Over the years, fashion and history have together created many different kinds of coats, and some unlikely styles have bled through as favorites. Double breasted peacoats Double breasted coats have been popular for much longer, but their first mention was in The Gentleman’s Gazette, Tailor & Cutter. The periodical was the leading tailor magazine in England. In 1868, it featured a “Prince of Wales Jacket”. With double breasted styling, it was similar to something people would have seen worn by sailors in the Navy. The illustration was titled “Prince of Wales pea-jacket,” hence, the peacoat was popularized. Though this is the only mention of the peacoat with an actual source, many are skeptical about where the peacoat originated. A peacoat is styled in many different ways today, some forgoing the traditional hip length for longer coats, and others sticking to a shorter and classic style. All fit closely and can be worn with almost anything. For fabrics most peacoat are thick wool, which provides protection from the weather, as well as something warm to walk around in. Parkas Parkas are a great option for cold-weather, because they were made for cooler temperatures —the Inuit people first created this type of coat as a “functional way to protect themselves from the freezing polar conditions,” according to the Ben Sherman Blog. But, this coat wasn’t created for men: the coat was traditionally worn by women and came with a pouch for little ones. The traditional hood was an important part of the parka, as was the longer length of the coat— this coat was intended for the coldest part of the world, and worked well in it. The coat quickly spread to military wear in the 1950s and was then adopted by many young adults who were able to find the coats—cheap and in large supply—at any Army surplus store. Now, the parka is a great style for those who love the utilitarian look and those who love to keep warm. Most parkas come with the traditional fur hoodie, and some are even in the traditional army hues of khaki and army green. Many, however, have been made with brighter colors, and thankfully, are made for men. The Polish Frock coat was the inspiration for the duffel coat as we know it today. The Polish Frock had a hood and a toggle closure typical of a duffel coat. During the 1950s, the style became extremely popular due to the release of these coats to the public as surplus, similar to the peacoat of earlier times. Today, the duffel coat is a popular option to dress up or to dress down, though isn’t meant for a tuxedo or suit. It’s not as fitted as some other options for coats, and will usually have 3 to 4 duffel ties down the front of the jacket with a hood and large patch pockets.
