Are your electricity bills related to your winter heating eating up a large chunk of your budget and you are wondering whether there is anything you can do about it? Most homeowners are afraid of seeing large energy bills every month and they keep asking whether there are any energy optimization ideas that will assist from air conditioning and heating contractors. Some of the practical tips include: Patch the leakages: It is important to start by doing an energy audit so you can know at what points you are actually losing heat. You may discover that you have some faulty doors, windows, bad ductwork or poor installation is your real culprit. There are energy companies that will happily provide energy audits for free and they will assist in the identification on such problems. A simple update of your home’s insulation could actually save you up to 30% on energy bills. Close the damper: Most people who have fireplaces almost always leave the damper open even when the fire isn’t going and this will let precious warmth escape the house. While such warm air is rising and escaping, you can be sure the birds on the roof of your house will really appreciate but you will have a large dent in your wallet. You want to start by closing the flue even though this may not help a great deal. It is also advisable that you install a glass door on the fireplace or perhaps a fireplace insert. Be prepared: If you want to avoid dealing with emergencies related to your broken heater, you are better off having a heating and air conditioning contractor have a look at it every so often. They will be able to let you know whether your system is running correctly and efficiently or what needs to be done in advance. You want to avoid having your heater go off in the middle of winter. Routine heater maintenance is always cheaper than making an emergency call. Perhaps you need to know that close to 55,000 home fires that cause death, injury and loss of property are as a result of issues with heaters that could have been detected earlier during routine servicing. Adjust the thermostat: You can save a good amount of your money by keeping the temperature at home at a constant of 70 degrees. Most modern heaters come with a fitted thermostat; you can use it to lower the settings during those periods when there is no one at home or when you are asleep, the savings on energy bills can be close to 20% of your regular consumption. Deal with the hot water heater: It is estimated that between 14% - 25% of energy related bills are directly as a result of hot water heaters. Since most heaters stay at 140 degrees, a simple reduction by a mere 10 degrees will give a saving of 3% - 5%.
