For most areas that don’t have a connection to the main sewage line provided by private corporations or the local government, the septic tank becomes the main component of their home’s septic system. There are many parts of the United States and Europe where great segments of the population in rural areas, small towns and suburbs rely on septic tanks. The word septic basically means anaerobic bacterial environment that happens inside the tank and which helps to decompose or mineralize all the waste that is discharged into the tank. In most cases, septic tanks are designed and maintained properly and when such is the case they should basically be trouble free. However, there are times when things go wrong and there are problems with septic tanks. However, since the tanks are usually buried underground, most homeowners are normally unaware of the developing trouble until some nasty odors announce that there are things that are amiss underground which could have been missed because they were out of sight. Keen homeowners can easily watch on some indicators that will give early warning signals on septic tank problems. The first warning shot is every time you discover there is a bad smell emanating from different areas of the house; this may include areas such as drains and toilets or when there is such a smell but you can’t just identify the source. Next is when you have backed up drains or when your toilets are flushing slower than normal. While there are times when this could simply be an indicators that there is a clogged drain or pipe, when snaking or plunging fails to solve the problem, chances are that you are dealing with a septic tank problem. Another warning sign that you should look out for is when grass seems to be literally greener over your septic tank. When you notice that the grass growing over the septic tank’s drain field is appearing lusher than the surrounding areas and especially during the dry season, you may want to look for a septic maintenance professional to dig out the problem. There are several potential problems with septic tanks that homeowners need to be aware of; one of them is the excessive use and dumping of grease and cooking oil. When this happens repeatedly the result is the blocking of inlet drains. Since oils and grease are difficult to degrade, they are not supposed to end up in your septic tank or else they will create odor problems and you will also have to pay the costs of periodic emptying. You should also expect septic tank problems if members of your household will flush non-biodegradable hygiene products such as cotton buds and sanitary napkins. The same is true about some chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides as well as some household bleach. Proper care and regular inspection and maintenance will help you out before it is too late. This article is penned by Richard for Allgood Septic Service who are a septic tanks installation and septic maintenance company that is providing services like pumping, sewer lines and backups to people of Statham, GA.
