An HVAC contractor service call can cost you around $100 or more. You can help yourself save that money by doing some simple evaluation and improvements on your boiler and help your system last longer. You should start by first examining the vent pipes whether your boiler uses gas or oil. The pipes will be made out of metal for an 80% efficient unit. Birds like to make nests in these so make sure that the pipes are not blocked. Also check for rust and make sure that the connections are not loose. 90% efficient units ,are made of PVC. Check these pipes for joints with cracks or leaks. After turning off the power, check the inside of the pipes for dirt and rust. You can use a shop vacuum as necessary for cleaning. The thermostat is next on the check list. They must be perfectly level if they are not digital. If they are not level, they lose their accuracy. Replacing old mechanical thermostats with digital units is an inexpensive and an easy DIY project that will save you money in the long run. Turn the system back on and turn up the thermostat. After allowing the boiler to heat up, you should bleed the air out of the system if your radiator has manual air vents. This can be accomplished by using a small screwdriver to crack open the vent until water starts to come out. Do this with the rest of the vents as necessary. After this, set the thermostat to your desired temperature. To save even more money and improve your system’s performance, you can replace the old manual air vents with automatic float type vents. This is also an easy DIY project. Other simple maintenance includes checking the carbon monoxide detector. Make sure that it is working properly and that it is not due for replacement. Often batteries simply need replacement. During the heating season, carbon monoxide detectors should be tested monthly and broken heater repaired. Routine service checks can also be performed on electric boilers. Shut off the power to the unit and with a simple voltmeter check to make sure that there is no electricity inside the unit. Next check all electrical connections to ensure they are tight. Check all wiring for signs of discoloration and damage. These are signs of a bad connection. After being assured that all electrical connections are good, turn the unit back on and bleed the air and perform the checks as with the gas boilers above. As in any DIY work, if something is complicated, unclear, or worrisome, your best option will always be to request an evaluation by a HVAC contractor, or licensed inspector. It is always wise to avoid danger with electrical and gas driven systems that are not behaving in typical fashion. Saving dollars is important, but saving lives more so.
