Vehicle Lifts Make Transporting Your Wheelchair or Scooter Easy

Construction,Home Improvement,Seniors
Vehicle lifts are an essential accessary if you need to transport a power or manual wheelchair or scooter. When equipped with the proper manual or motorized lift, you can easily tow or stow your mobility vehicle to make sure that it is always on hand.

Modifying a Van with Vehicle Lifts

The lift is one of the major components of a modified van used by or to transport someone who is physically challenged. You can choose a manual lift that requires driving the chair or scooter off or on an attached ramp, or a motorized lift that comes flat to the ground for easy access. Some models even swing out to pick up your chair or scooter to move it into your vehicle.

Whether you buy a swing out or platform style depends on your ability to manage getting the chair or scooter into position, and on how unobtrusive you want the device to be. You can buy a model that mounts on the back or on the side of your vehicle; back-loading models allow your vehicle to utilize regular sized parking spaces.

Questions to Ask about Vehicle Lifts

Modified vans tend to be either full-size vans or minivans to start with. Full-size models may have a side or rear wheelchair lift, along with a lowered floor and or a raised roof. Minivans, which are more economical to operate, offer similar lifts and may even have one to position a disabled person in the driver seat.

With several different types of vehicle lifts available, how can you choose the best one for your needs? There are a few questions you should ask to guide your choice.

  1. Do you want to transport your chair or scooter inside or outside your vehicle? Indoor transport keeps your equipment out of the weather, while not adding to the length of your vehicle. Most models designed for outside transport require a Class I, II, or III trailer hitch. You can even obtain a hybrid model that allows indoor and outdoor transport.
  2. Will you need the lift permanently attached to your car? Some devices can swing out of place when not in use or are removable, while others install underneath the car to make them less visible when not in use. Even equipment that uses drive on, drive off platforms is available in models that do not block visibility or prohibit access to the vehicle by other passengers.
  3. Will the user be in wheelchair or scooter during lift process? Vehicle lifts for occupied devices utilize a platform that accommodates more weight when raising and lowering so that the person can get inside the car and into the right position when traveling. These models can also lift unoccupied devices.

Contact a Reputable Dealer for Vehicle Lifts

Vehicle lifts on modified vehicles ensure maximum mobility for those who rely on wheelchairs or scooters. Contact a reputable ADA certified dealer experienced in providing vehicle lifts so that they can work with you to find the best model for your needs.
