Jayesh Shah Architects, entrusted with the interior renovation of Javeri Residence, a 4-bedroom apartment in South Mumbai, lend a contemporary chic look to the place, wrapping loads of warmth and sophistication in its folds. Retaining the basic configuration of the 2500 sq. ft. apartment, the architect uses a defined design language that veers between old-world imagery and modern accents in an eclectic chic ambience. Generally uncluttered, he defines visual pockets that frame immediate vistas creating little packages of narratives in the decor. Linear spaces are ingeniously treated viz., a full-length mirror along the long and narrow entrance passage visually expands it; while the rather lengthy living area is cleverly sectioned off into formal and casual (TV) living and dining, with the designs of their false ceiling subtly indicating zoning. Spaces homogeneously blend into one another, defined as they are by white Michelangelo marble lending a seamless feel to the space. That the architects have based their concept on blending modern furniture/furnishings with classic detailing becomes evident across the length and breadth of the house. While rich tan leather sofas, back-painted glass dining table, a reflex glass console with mirror frame and the Murano glass centre table mark their presence with élan, so do the gold-leaved trellises, intricate solid marble Jali panels and champagne-leaved entertainment wall that hosts the TV, bar and storage. Foscarini Diesel and Tom Dixon pendant lights gracefully coexist with framed works of art that ooze traditional splendour. Full-length curtains lend height to the space, while roller blinds made of ethnic-finish fabric serve to highlight the width. Meticulously planned storage and camouflaging of services add functional edge to the apartment, while a combination of grey quartz and white artificial marble, silver pearl finish cabinets and the like account for its visual allure. Floor-mounted Flaminia roll basin in the powder toilet revels in a backdrop of antique gold floral motif, getting reflected in the full length mirror. Wall to wall wardrobes, marble ledge on window side, defined lighting using floor, surface and ceiling mounted lamps, smoked gold glass side table and pendants, bright single seaters and Ottoman add variety, easily blending the classic with the modern.
