7 Home DIY Projects for Handy People to Try

Home Improvement
The rage behind DIY projects reflects a growing social interest in doing what you can to create a relaxing, beautiful home, even on a budget! Today, anyone can have a great home and yard without having to pay contractors thousands of dollars for extreme projects. People make their own art and plant their own trees.

There is more daring work out there for those with a little experience with tools and building materials. If you are a daring and experienced craftsperson looking for something more challenging than refinishing a table, then head to your local hardware store and search for high-quality lumber in Massachusetts, because the following 7 projects are going to pose tough but rewarding challenges for you. Give them a try and relish in the amazing results.

1. Frame a picture yourself: Sure, you can pay an outrageous amount to have something professionally framed, but you can also do it at home. Better yet, you can build your own frame! Using just four pieces of wood, you can construct a wooden square frame that will be an art piece of its own. You can make it as simple or ornate as you choose. Finish or paint it to match the art of your choice.

2. Build your own pergola: Pergolas are great features for any back yard. They offer space to relax, cook, or socialize. They are simple enough to construct out of lumber and cover with a natural finish. It will be the pride and joy of your back yard, especially if you can manage to create those characteristic curved edges on the ceiling planks.

3. Construct your very own mailbox: Brick-and-mortar mailboxes are common, but a cool and crafty wooden mailbox will have an interesting charm to it. Get creative with the shaping and design elements, and be sure to include a motif like right angles, equilateral triangles, or trimmed edges.

4. Build a wooden shed: A shed can store your tools, yard equipment, or other storage items that do not need climate control. The shed can be a simple roof on 4 posts or be detailed and fancy, almost like a miniature house. The choice is yours.

5. Install floating shelves: Most people just finish raw lumber and hang it up on their wall, which might be a bit too simple for an experienced craftsman. For a real challenge, consider adding built-in bookcases to your wall. Typically, bookcases are 6 to 8 feet high. You can get creative with details like molding and inlay, or keep the bookcase simple and minimal.

6. Create a raised wooden deck with different levels: Your barbecue pit and a table can sit on the highest level and be railed off, then a lower level just 2 steps down can have a swing or outdoor sofa and some potted plants. This will transform your back patio from ordinary to extreme.

7. Build a coffee table that can be used anywhere: Be sure to weather seal the wood if you are planning on keeping it outside. You can devise a round, oval, rectangular, or square top on a single pendant leg or 4 posts. What the heck, it's your table; give it a triangular top if you want! Make it in a star shape! You are the one in control of the project; no one else can tell you what to build.

Always be careful when using tools at home. Wear the proper safety glasses and gloves and do not use any machinery you are not familiar with. If you can bring a little experience and expertise to your own home, you can take pride in building something all your own and on your own. Just be sure you have all the tools for success at your disposal, like lumber in Massachusetts. When people compliment you on the finished results of any of the above projects, you can proudly say, "Thank you, I built it myself."
