Rainbow Colours

Grey clouds, overcast skies and heavy rains translate into more time at home. But often interiors exude a gloomy look-feel. So, let’s add pizzazz and ratchet up that cheery vibe so that you can enjoy the magicof the monsoons…

Mirror image To truly reflect the outdoors inside, use blues, greens and indigos. To further add dynamism pops of lime yellow, fuchsia pink, burnt orange and even B&W (when used judiciously) can enliven the overall palette. Small floral and leafy motifs depicting the season’s blooms in greens, yellows and whites are a good option; but if you want a traditional look -Ikat works well due to its abstract nature whilst for a contemporary setting, explore geometric patterns.

“Using bright colours are ideal for interiors, but the key is to offset it by lighter shades of furniture such as white or a lighter wood like maple,” recommends principal architect Bhavna Jacob of eponymous firm.

Artificial planters, small shrubs, artificial lawn grass or even live mosses and lichens and vertical green walls are interesting ways to ensure year-round greenery at one’s home.Use of gravel, pebbles and dried leaves make for good dry landscaping; obliquely maintaining a connection with nature.A strong inside- outside integration of architecture and landscape can be achieved viz. seamless walls of glass, skylights etc.

Affordable chic For all other décor and accessorizing, the rule of the season is to pack up all the expensive stuff and bring out everything natural and earthy. “Shun heavy drapes and put up light sheers, possibly in accents that sway along with the wind,” advises Simeen Quraishi, co-principal architect, MoriqInteriors and Design Consultants.

Simple items such as bhurnis or books can add colour to shelves or side tables. Family photos can be framed and put on empty walls, or better still, put up a sketch done by your little one to create a cutesyatmosphere.

Quick fix To instantly add on a colourful dimension, try using mutli-coloured cushions and rugs. “A small gesture like adding a cheerful polka dotted doormat can instantly perk up a space,” says Priyanka P, co-principal, PS Design. Fresh flowers (sunflowers are a great option) with green foliage in a simple vase placed on a side table can enliven a dull corner.

Also, since fresh flowers are in full bloom, ditch artificial ones and go for the real fragrant variety, like jasmines, lilies etc. To heighten the aesthetic quotient, fill a shallow tray with water and add floating flowers. Use oil diffusers and scented candles to add aroma and get rid of stuffy smell.

Finally, switch off your cell phone, use some scented candles and get lost in the moment of the drizzle and the sweet smelling earth. Revel in your monsoon moments!
