Social media holds so much promise when it comes to marketing, but few companies have really mastered it to the point that it makes an impact on their traffic and conversions. Many of the problems they are having come from the general business misconception of how marketing works on social media. You can't just spam your links and coupons in a feed; that is a perfect way to get blocked. You need to come to understand influence marketing, and learn how to develop a network of social media influencers that are talking about you.

What is influence marketing? Influence marketing is using word of mouth to generate interest. That sounds like it wouldn't work well – and offline it is exactly what you don't want to do. Online, influence marketing is proving to be one of the most successful strategies for businesses looking to increase brand awareness and conversion rates. Using online social media networks, the business develops relationships with an influencer. The influencer is someone whose posts and comments have a following. They then seed the influencer with creative content that the influencer puts out to their followers. This is very much a quid pro quo relationship. Most often the influencer is looking for a way to stay influential with their following – that means always having something to talk about and something new to show. The business gets someone with a following to promote their product without it being a paid advertisement. This increases the perception of reliability and trustworthiness from potential customers.

Who are the social media influencers? Who the social media influencers are may surprise you. They generally aren't celebrities, but regular day people who have struck a chord with others in what they post and how they phrase their comments. Depending on who your target audience is, they might not even be someone who uses your products; they may be someone who respects quality and innovation. That means they are reaching people who also have influence within their personal social spheres. Finding them takes patience, you have to carry watch hashtags and threads to find out what people are talking about, and where it is coming from.

Why not just target big sites or people with millions of followers? Influence marketing strives to create a measurable impact. You can't measure an impact if the majority of your marketing material is being thrown out with the rest of the feed fill. It is better to start from the bottom with social media influencers who have a tightly targeted following. This means that whatever appears in their feed is going to get read. From there, people like and share the content and it begins to reach out. By the time it gets picked up by a major platform, it already has the readership numbers behind it to be featured without you having to pay for placement.

Why not just pay for placement? Paid placement ads don't guarantee that your content will get noticed. All it guarantees is that you have paid for the placement. With influence marketing, you build a guaranteed stream of traffic. Once you have a good network of social media influencers, you will see dramatic changes in your conversion rates.
